Our Sustainability Strategy – Ascend
In 2024, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) introduced a new strategic framework – Ascend, which focuses on 24 strategic goals across four distinct pillars.
This framework will help us monitor and manage our impact – both positive and negative – on economies, environments and people, as we continue to strengthen Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) status as the leading international aviation hub and a key engine for Hong Kong’s economic development, while aspiring to be the greenest airport in the world.
- Environmental Excellence
Our Approach
AAHK is on a journey to make HKIA the World’s Greenest Airport by adopting high standards of environmental stewardship. We are transforming the airport into a low-carbon, climate-resilient hub and championing sustainability practices that minimise our impacts on ecosystems.
Strategic Goals- AAHK and its key aviation-related business partners commit to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050, with a midpoint target of 55% absolute emissions reduction by 2035 from a 2018 baseline
- Contribute to the energy transition in Hong Kong by promoting and adopting renewable and lower-carbon fuels at HKIA
- Improve HKIA's climate resilience by understanding climate-related risks and opportunities and addressing the operational impacts of climate change
- Incorporate green and sustainable features into the design and construction of new projects to minimise environmental impacts and future-proof our infrastructure
- Adopt resource-efficient practices and increase waste recovery to contribute to the development of the circular economy in Hong Kong
- Maintain sustainable funds to support the delivery of the Marine Ecology and Fisheries Enhancement Strategy and continue to implement voluntary enhancement measures

- Enable airport digitalisation by enhancing our cybersecurity and data privacy approach and responding to the evolving threat landscape and related regulation

- Remain well-prepared to predict, prevent and swiftly respond to potential operational disruptions at the airport
- Develop and implement supply chain management practices that go beyond compliance to create shared value for AAHK and our business partners

Our Approach
HKIA drives economic vitality and community wellbeing in Hong Kong and beyond. Capitalising on Hong Kong’s distinct advantage at the heart of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), we strategically invest in infrastructure and community partnerships that create shared value throughout our region.
Strategic Goals- Prepare HKIA to handle over 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo throughput from 2035 onwards
- Contribute to Hong Kong's economic growth through creation of high-value employment opportunities and economic value distribution from the operation and development of HKIA
- Strengthen HKIA’s connection to strategic locations to drive economic and social contributions in the GBA and beyond
- Reinforce AAHK's cargo leadership through strategic investments in cargo facilities to sustain long-term growth
- Engage the airport community through meetings, workshops, exhibitions and campaigns to understand and respond to their priorities
- Offer programmes through the EXTRA MILE Project to benefit youth, the non-Chinese speaking community and working parents
