Cathay sets a new target 2030 carbon intensity in support of its 2050 net-zero goal

06  June  2024

In support of the 2050 net-zero goal, Cathay has set a new target to improve its carbon intensity by 12% from the 2019 level by 2030. The new near-term target aims to reduce carbon emissions from Cathay's jet fuel use per revenue tonne kilometre (RTK) from 761 gCO2/RTK to 670 gCO2/RTK. To achieve these improvements, more than 70 new passengers and freighter aircraft, which can be up to 25% more fuel efficient compared with the previous generation, will be joining Cathay's fleet over the coming years.  In addition, Cathay will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to offset 10% of the carbon emissions from employee duty travel on Cathay Pacific flights from 2024 onwards, as a step further to scale up SAF usage on all fronts.

In April, Cathay released its latest Sustainability Report, in which it also highlighted other sustainability commitments, including reducing passenger-facing single-use plastics (SUP) items from an average of 7.7 pieces per passenger in 2019 to 1.5 pieces by 2025 and reducing cabin waste by 30% from the 2019 baseline by 2030.
