(Hong Kong, 22 October 2024, 1700hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) today released the air traffic figures for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for September 2024. During the month, HKIA handled 4.06 million passengers and 29,595 flight movements, marking year-on-year increases of 22.4% and 22.3%, respectively. Cargo throughput increased to 414,000 tonnes, up 10.2% compared to September 2023.
Passenger traffic maintained its steady recovery in September. All passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents and visitors as well as transfer / transit passengers, experienced significant growth compared to the same month last year. Traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Mainland China recorded the most substantial increases during the month.
Cargo throughput also continued to increase, seeing double-digit year-on-year growth. This was mainly attributed to 13.0% growth in both transshipments and exports. Among key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East increased most significantly in September 2024.
Over the first three quarters of the year, the airport handled 39 million passengers while flight movements increased to 267,035, representing 40.9% and 39.0% growth, respectively, compared to the same period in 2023. Cargo volume rose by 15.7% year on year to more than 3.59 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume rose by a significant 63.5% year on year to 50.8 million while flight movements increased by 49.9% to 351,015. Cargo throughput grew by 15.9% to 4.82 million tonnes.
Meanwhile, AAHK received awards in the "Facial Recognition – Aerospace" and "Automation – Aviation" categories for its “Flight Token” and autonomous electric tractor initiatives, respectively, at the HKB Technology Excellence Awards 2024 organised by the Hong Kong Business magazine. These awards recognise companies of a variety of industries that have delivered outstanding performance through innovative technologies.
