Airport Authority Signs MoUs to Enhance Connectivity and Cooperation with Southeast Asia Partners

(Hong Kong, 2 August 2024, 1830hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with its counterparts and flagship carriers in Vietnam and Cambodia this week, with a view to further enhancing air connectivity with Southeast Asia, as well as contributing to the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Witnessed by John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Tran Luu Quang, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, signed three MoUs with top management of Airports Corporation of Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines, and Sovico Group, holding company of the private VietJet Air in Hanoi on Thursday.

Apart from strengthening connectivity between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Vietnam, the MoUs also focus on exchange of experiences between management teams, advancing operation excellence and service enhancement, talent development through courses offered at Hong Kong International Aviation Academy (HKIAA), sustainability development of the aviation industry, and more.

Another MoU was signed in Phnom Penh on Wednesday between Chairman Fred Lam and Cyril Girot, Chief Executive Officer of Société Concessionnaire de l’Aéroport, a major operator of Cambodia’s international airports. Witnessed by John Lee and Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, the MoU aims to boost connectivity between HKIA and Cambodia, as well as to explore opportunities related to operational and service excellence.

Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, said, “We are delighted to have signed these important MoUs with our partners to facilitate the opening of more routes and to increase the frequency of flights connecting with Hong Kong. We are pleased that airlines on both sides have responded positively. We are also committed to nurturing and enriching aviation industry practitioners. Since 2017, our Aviation Academy has been providing a diverse range of programmes and courses to over 230,000 local, Mainland China, and overseas participants. We are glad that our expertise and experience are valued by our neighbours in Southeast Asia.”

In July, there were 85 pairs of passenger and cargo flights operating between HKIA and Vietnam each week, and 10 pairs of passenger and cargo flights operating between HKIA and Cambodia each week.
