Airport Arts and Culture Festival<br>Showcases Hong Kong’s Cultural Heritage

(HONG KONG, 4 October 2023, 1900hrs)  –  Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage is showcased in a wide variety of art forms at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Arts and Culture Festival 2023 that officially opens today. Partnering with Hong Kong’s leading art organisations, the festival runs from 28 September to 31 December with curated exhibitions and performances at various locations of the airport. 

In collaboration with Attacca Projects, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, M+, MobArt Gallery, and West Kowloon Cultural District’s Freespace Jazz Fest, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) presents art exhibitions and performances by emerging and established local artists, with the aim of creating unique memories for travellers.

This festival highlights a variety of art forms. Traditional Chinese paintings coming to life through animation are presented with a fresh interpretation on the airport’s giant digital screen, while celebrated Hong Kong movies are recreated in stylised comics. Three pianos covered in vivid illustrations by local artists are put at different locations in the terminal for appreciation and live performances. Traditional postcards are transformed through art and interactive elements to showcase the essence of Hong Kong.

The festival was kicked off today at an opening ceremony in Terminal 1 with a jazz performance by Teriver Cheung Quartet. Speaking at the ceremony, Fred Lam, Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, said, “I am delighted that the airport once again hosts this large-scale event after three years of the pandemic. The passenger number at our airport has continued to rise in the past year. As the gateway to welcome travellers, HKIA is an ideal place to showcase the diverse cultural landscape of our city, while providing an enjoyable airport experience for passengers.”

Representatives from Hong Kong’s arts and cultural institutions gathered at the airport to mark the opening, including Esa Leung, Assistant Director (Heritage & Museums), Leisure & Cultural Services Department; Wendy Gan, Deputy CEO (District Development), West Kowloon Cultural District; Doryun Chong, Deputy Director, Curatorial and Chief Curator, M+; Rebecca Ip, Executive Director, HK Arts Centre; Prof Gillian Choa, Director, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; Steph Chung, Founder, MobArt Gallery; and Ricky Tsang, Founder, Attacca Projects.
