(HONG KONG, 5 July 2023, 1900hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) published the Annual Report 2022/23 today for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2023. As pandemic-related travel restrictions were lifted in Hong Kong during the year, passenger numbers at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) rebounded significantly to 12.4 million representing more than seven times year-on-year increase. Flight movements increased 11.5% to 161,160. Impacted by global economic slowdown and disruption of the supply chain, HKIA’s cargo throughput dropped 16.0%, to 4.1 million tonnes in 2022/23. Nonetheless, HKIA continued to be the world’s busiest cargo airport.
To boost traffic recovery, AAHK has launched a campaign which gives away 500,000 air tickets to passengers in major markets. The campaign is anticipated to create a multiplier effect to expedite traffic resumption.
To welcome passengers, AAHK has introduced new services and facilities at HKIA. New facilities include Sky Bridge, the two-storey children playground, 24-hour food court, and more. The luxury shopping zone has been revamped and upgraded. To create a hassle-free journey, the biometric-based Flight Token system has been fully implemented to allow passengers to use the face as identification from check-in to boarding. A new valet parking service at the airport was also introduced for departing passengers.
Meanwhile, major projects of the Airport City blueprint continue to progress. The Third Runway was officially commissioned in November 2022, on time and within budget. SKYCITY is taking shape. 11 SKIES, poised to be Hong Kong’s largest integrated complex of retail, dining, entertainment and office facilities, is progressing steadily.
To maintain the position as the world’s leading cargo airport, a novel sea-air transshipment model has been introduced. By setting up HKIA Logistics Park in Dongguan and a new airside intermodal cargo pier at HKIA, the model aims to elevate the efficiency of air cargo delivery from the Greater Bay Area to destinations around the world via HKIA. HKIA is also adding cargo handling capacity. DHL Express completed an expansion programme at its Central Asia Hub. The premium logistics centre, developed by Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, Cainiao Network, is substantially complete.
AAHK places great importance on the environment and airport staff’s well-being. AAHK has been continuing its efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and assist business partners to implement carbon reduction measures. The HKIA Community Building was opened last December, providing an array of amenities that serve all staff working at the airport, including cafeteria, multipurpose sports hall, gym room, the new Airport T1 Preschool and the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy.
