(HONG KONG, 22 December 2021, 1730hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) expressed great sorrow over the death of two contractor workers in a fatal industrial accident at a worksite on Chun Kwan Road at the airport, and extended its deepest condolences to the workers’ families. AAHK and the contractor will contact the workers’ families as soon as possible to provide support and assistance.
AAHK received a report at 0945hrs this morning that two contractor workers were suspected of feeling unwell after inhaling an unknown gas while working inside a manhole on Chun Kwan Road. AAHK immediately deployed personnel at the scene to provide support and assistance. Fire Services later rescued the two workers, who were transferred to the hospital for treatment. Three other workers doing groundwork around the manhole also felt unwell and were transferred to the hospital for treatment.
Prior to the commencement of the entire work project, the contractor had carried out a risk assessment on the relevant works. Relevant tests were conducted by the contractor before commencement of work. All concerned workers were qualified persons and had received safety training. The contractor was required to conduct safety check procedures before work commencement. Works at the site are now suspended. AAHK will cooperate with the authorities to assist all relevant investigations in connection with this accident.
