Airport workers now served by new bus routes

1998/06/21

(HONG KONG, 21 June 1998) -- The growing number of people working at Chek Lap Kok as the new airport gears up for opening will be served from tomorrow (June 22) by a comprehensive system of bus services.

It is expected that eventually some 45,000 people may work at the new airport and care has been taken to ensure that different modes of public transport services at different price ranges will be available for all airport-bound workers.

For those working at the new airport, buses will prove an efficient and reasonably-priced way of getting to work. A total of 19 bus routes will serve the airport from Monday morning in conjunction with the MTRC's Tung Chung line. These include:

Two new external bus routes

E34 Tin Shui Wai Town Centre -- Ground Transportation Centre

The existing E11, E22, E32, E33 and E42 services will be extended to the Ground Transportation Centre.

The N21 overnight service will be extended to the Ground Transportation Centre.

"The services will not be suitable for sightseers or visitors in the period up to airport opening on July 6," Airport Authority General Manager - Landside Operations Mr Kalid Razack said.

"There will be no access to the passenger terminal building. Only workers will be allowed access to the various operating areas and businesses on the island," he emphasized.

He added that, to avoid disappointment, members of the public should not utilise the bus services until after airport opening. "Our focus is on getting the many people who need to travel to Chek Lap Kok for commissioning to and from work," he said.
