Special Needs Access

Accessibility for All

The HKIA was accredited by ACI’s Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Program with the highest possible Level 3 ranking in 2023. It was recognised for its barrier-free services and facilities for travellers with special needs.

To deliver a spectrum of barrier-free facilities for travellers with reduced mobility, visual or hearing impairments, and other special needs, we offer a Courtesy Channel for expedited entry to the security screening and immigration area, internet terminals and phone charging facilities at accessible height, braille maps and tactile guide paths, and audio warning signal and messages in all people conveyance facilities, such as lights, escalators and walkways.

  • Arriving at the Gate

    Once you arrive at the gate, you should proceed to the immigration counters on Level 5 in Terminal 1 (T1):

    Terminal 1 There is no change of level required if you arrive at T1. If your arrival location is near the West Hall, you may take the Automated People Mover (APM) to the East Hall
    T1 Midfield Concourse Take the APM on Level 1 to the East Hall of T1, then proceed to Level 5.
    T1 Satellite Concourse Take the escalator /lift from Sky Bridge (located next to Gate 15) to Level 9. Pass through Sky Bridge and take another escalator /lift down to Level 5. Proceed to the immigration process at the T1.
  • Immigration Clearance

    The following facilities are available at the immigration area for passengers with special needs.

    • Wide self-service e-channels for Hong Kong residents and “qualified” visitors
    • Counters for passengers with special needs
    • Seats for passengers waiting for assistance with immigration clearance
  • Baggage Reclaim

    Designated baggage waiting area for wheelchair passengers.

  • Travelling to the City Centre

    By bus/ taxi 

    After you arrive at the Meeters and Greeters Hall, you may reach the bus terminus and taxi station via the downramps.

    By Airport Express

    You can reach the Airport Express platform using the walkway outside the Arrivals Halls. No change of level is required.

    By limousine

    You can reach the limousine waiting area by following the channel near Arrivals Hall B and taking the lift to Level 3.

    By car

    All car parks are accessible by lifts.

     
  • Transfer Procedures

    Transfer Desks are located on the same level as the arrival gates.

    T1 Midfield Concourse:

    If your flight arrives at the T1 Midfield Concourse, you can reach the Transfer Desks in Terminal 1 (T1) by taking the Automated People Mover on Level 1 of the T1 Midfield Concourse to T1.

  • Security Screening

    Passengers with special needs may use the priority channels to enter the security screening area.

  • Wheelchair Service

    Passengers who wish to use wheelchair service at the Hong Kong International Airport may pre-book the complimentary service by contacting their airlines or travel agents.

    With pre-booking, the airlines will arrange for passengers needing a wheelchair to be picked up at an agreed location, such as the terminal kerbside, the Airport Express Line platform or the check-in counter, depending on the request made in advance.

    Alternatively, passengers can also procure and pre-book the wheelchair service at a charge from the airport-licensed service provider ALLWAYS 24-hour hotline at +852 2275 0000.

    If passengers wish to travel with their own battery-powered wheelchairs, please refer to the section on "Battery-powered mobility aids" (e.g. wheelchairs) in Packing Tips for Air Passengers issued by the Civil Aviation Department (CAD). Please note that carriage on aircraft of battery-powered wheelchairs is subject to the consent of the relevant airlines. Individual airlines may set requirements which may be different from, or in additional to, the CAD's recommended guidelines in Packing Tips for Air Passengers.   • Caring Corner

    The Caring Corner is a rest area for travellers with special needs, including passengers with reduced mobility, the elderly and pregnant women. This wheelchair-accessible facility is equipped with seating, televisions and telephone helplines.

  • Toilets for the Disabled

    Toilets for the disabled are located throughout the airport. They are equipped with automatic facilities and additional handles.

    Accessible Changing Room provides safe and comfortable toilet and shower facilities designed for passengers with reduced mobility.

  • Tactile Guides

    Tactile guide paths are provided at the departure kerbs of T1, as well as AEL platforms, to lead you to the nearest customer service counter. Tactile guide paths are also available in the T1 Midfield Concourse.

  • Braille Facilities

    Braille maps are provided at the departures kerbs of T1 (Zones 2 and 3 in T1), as well as in the T1 Midfield Concourse.

    Many airport facilities also provide signage in Braille, including the walls of toilet entrances, control panels and handles of lifts, handrails, etc.
