(HONG KONG, 11 December 2020, 1900hrs) – Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) today released the traffic figures of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for November 2020. During the month, the airport handled 81,000 passengers and 12,565 flight movements, representing year-on-year decreases of 98.4% and 61.4%, respectively. Cargo throughput was 436,000 tonnes, recording a year-on-year drop of 3.0%, while freighter movements saw year-on-year growth of 12.7% to 6,270 from 5,564.
Travel demand remained weak last month as a result of the continuous COVID-19 pandemic. During the month, passenger traffic decreased significantly compared to the same month last year in all categories, namely Hong Kong residents, visitors and transfer/ transit passengers.
On the cargo front, imports and exports grew 12% and 5% year-on-year, respectively, amid the traditional cargo peak in November. Transshipments experienced a significant decrease due to shortage of belly capacity on passenger flights. Overall, cargo throughput to and from Mainland China and Southeast Asia experienced the most significant decreases during the month.
Over the first eleven months of the year, HKIA handled 8.7 million passengers and 148,015 flight movements, representing 86.7% and 61.6% declines, respectively. Cargo throughput saw a 7.7% drop to 4.0 million tonnes.
On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger throughput and flight movements recorded 80.0% and 57.0% year-on-year declines to 14.5 million and 182,015, respectively. Cargo throughput fell 7.1% to 4.5 million tonnes.
